Anemoi was an integrated public artwork by Rick Vermey and Daniel Giuffre (if/LAB) for the Liv Apartments entrance corridor at 51 Queen Victoria Street, Fremantle. The work was delivered for Defence Housing Australia with HASSELL as architect, DENMAC on fabrication and installation, Light Application on lighting programming, and Helen Curtis / Apparatus as art consultant.

Chris worked on the project as core computational staff at concept stage while working with if/LAB. His involvement sat in the computational design and concept-development layer: helping translate the Fremantle Doctor into a simulated spatial field, testing how wind behaviour could become a sail-like surface, and supporting the early logic for an artwork that joined form, environmental data, fabrication and light.

The title refers to the Anemoi, the Greek gods of the winds. The project connects Fremantle’s coastal identity with the Fremantle Doctor, the summer sea breeze that shapes the city’s atmosphere. The complex form was generated through digital simulation across a sail-like surface rather than treated as a decorative precedent.

At night the piece becomes an environmental instrument. 850 individually programmable LED light nodes are directed by an anemometer, allowing actual wind conditions to shape the artwork’s lighting patterns and colours. Within C-A-A this sits as a direct work-history example of responsive spatial systems: weather, simulation, fabrication, light and building threshold working together.
